The Class 423 4-VEP EMUs were introduced in 1967 for secondary servies on the newly electrified Bournemouth route and subsequent batches went to other areas making these trains commonplace over the Southern Region.
The trains are fitted for high-density commuter work with 2+3 seating and worked services around London and the South-East until 2006.
